Harvard Glee Club
The Harvard Glee Club, the oldest male collegiate chorus in America, is today a fifty-voice choir of students at Harvard University.
Founded by students in 1858 to sing college songs and glees, the Glee Club began under the leadership of Professor Archibald T. Davison in 1912 to develop a repertoire of distinction and gain a distinguished international reputation.  Over the ensuing century, the Glee Club has traveled on 109 concert tours, released nine recordings, and collaborated with numerous renowned ensembles.
The Glee Club draws its repertoire from the music of ten centuries, with a particular emphasis on the performance of present day American music, sacred repertory of the Renaissance, and folk songs of the world.
Many of the foremost composers of the twentieth century penned works for the Harvard Glee Club, including Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, Gustav Holst, Randall Thompson, and Irving Fine.
Since 1978, the Glee Club has sought to enrich the male choral repertory by commissioning new works by such composers as Virgil Thomson, Toru Takemitsu, Morten Lauridsen, Dominick Argento, Nancy Galbraith, and John Muehliesen.

Comment from Patrick “PAKKUN” Harlan:
Music has the power to change lives. I myself learned many things through the Glee Club. I learned not only about the music of many countries and eras, but also how to interact with various languages and cultures, how to bring numerous individuals together into a single unit, how to rehearse in order to perfect a piece as a carefully-crafted work of art – the list goes on and on – it was an education in a wide array of fields.
Thinking back, I believe that the things that I learned in the Glee Club continue to serve me well on a daily basis, both in my daily life in Japan and in my work in the performing arts. Without the Glee Club, I would not be who I am today.
I am not sure what kinds of discoveries, new encounters, and new education this concert series will bring to each of you, but I do believe that the possibilities are endless. I hope you will join in harmony with the youth of Harvard University gathered in Japan for this occasion.
